Before I post the homework, I want to preface it with some thoughts. The kids were very talkative today and quite disruptive. I had to spend a lot of time redirecting their attention and making them focus on their work. Because of this, they have quite a bit of homework. I talked with the class about the consequences of the talking and how the additional homework might make them reflect on how hard they work in class.

Prior to today, the kids have been super. I was just bragging on them last night and how well-behaved they have been. I guess I shouldn't of counted my chickens before they hatch. I hope they'll be better tomorrow.

Tidbits from our Day...

Today in Science, we did a fun activity called "Blowing in the Wind." We have been studying the different types of erosion. Our focus today was wind erosion. To help prove that heavier items fall first when deposition occurs, we conducted this experiment. Here are two pictures that show some of the class participating in the science experiment.

During our science lesson we did a really fun activity on beach erosion. We have been studying how moving water causes erosion. One common type of water erosion is waves. They can move sand from one place to another, destroy rocks and buildings, and sometimes even put the material in other places. We did an experiment using sand, water, and small beach houses. The students created a beach house and put it along the coast. Then they made some waves happen. Guess what... it destroyed their houses!

We spent a lot of the day writing letters to participate in "The Great Mail Race." We reviewed the steps for writing a friendly letter. Then we composed letters that described our school. These letters were sent with a questionnaire to 50 other schools in each state. Each child chose a state and addressed an envelope to a city and state. We hope to get lots of letters back to post in our school. Let the races begin...

We had the shocking conclusion to our science experiment on vascular and nonvascular plants. We discovered that celery (a type of vascular plant) has tubes that carry the water up through the plant. The proof was in the experiment. We discovered that the water level went down and the celery gained mass because the water was in it. We studies the moss carefully (a type of nonvascular plant) and looked at the rhizoids that are used to pass water from cell to cell. It was also interesting to see the spore cases that were on top of the moss. Spore cases are used by some plants to reproduce.

Homework:
  • Spelling: Cursive Worksheet "Vowel Sounds in boy and out"
  • Math: Finish Addition and Subtraction Packet (I wrote on students' papers in red ink the problems they were supposed to finish for homework. No one has more than 20 problems to do.)

Here is a brief synopsis of what we did today in each subject...

Daily Review- While I worked on attendance, checked assignment books, and collected homework the students complete a page in their Math Homework Workbooks on decimal place value.

Physical Education- They ran the mile! Mr. Morrison said they put forth good effort and many of the students improved their times from 4th grade.

Reading- I introduced the new skill- generalizations. We defined generalizations, listed clue words, and gave examples in our notes. Then we read a story and identified generalizations made in the story. We ended by competing a page in our Practice Workbook. We also defined and drew pictures of our new vocabulary words.

Spelling- Students took a pretest and then corrected their tests. This helps students identify which words they need to study this week. For homework students need to finish a cursive worksheet.

Writing- Didn't happen! We were supposed to start our personal narratives, but we go called down for physicals.

Math: We reviewed the steps for borrowing across zeros. Then students were given time to practice thi skill by completing some worksheets.

Science: We made and read a rubberband book called A Question of Kingdoms. We used this book to list key details about each kingdom on the board. Then we divided into two teams for a game. Each team was given an organism. They had to determine to which kingdom it belonged and tell their reason for their choice. They had a lot of fun!

Novel Units: Since 6 of the students were out of the room with Mrs. Perry, we read a short book called Lilah's Gift. The story focuses on a girl who has to give up her puppy, but after seeing a dog save a little girl she decides to donate it to become a hearing aid dog. We then watched a video about service dogs and completed a web on generalizations about dogs.

We had a very long day! The Virginia Department of Education is having each student in Pulaski County take a pretest to determine what the students know about technology. We thought it was a brief test, but it ended up being 60 questions and took us almost 1 1/2 hours. Needless to say, we didn't get much else done this morning.

We started a new unit in math on addition and subtraction. We will do estimation, whole numbers, and decimals. This is a short unit because it is a review of third and fourth grade.

A recap of what we did today by Amber...

This morning our class did a math work sheet in our math SOL workbook. Then we went to PE and played four different games. Then we went to the bathroom and back to the room. We did reading. In reading we read a story, did our vocabulary, and completed pages in our workbooks. After that we did our spelling. We shared our stories about the things we brought in our bags. Then we went to lunch. When we came back we did math and learned a poem to remind us how to round. We played a fun game to practice, but Mrs. Watson won. After math we had recess. During science we watched a Brainpop video about cells and then played a matching game to make sure we are ready for our test tomorrow. Mrs. Groot taught us about latitude and longitude in social studies. Finally, we read a story called The Visitor from Outer Space and make character webs.

Homework:

  • Spelling: Cursive Worksheet "Vowel Sounds in r"
  • Science: Worksheet "Drumming Up Diffrences"
  • Scholastic Book Orders are due tomorrow

The class did a terrific job this moring on their daily work. They worked quietly and finished their assignment on place value. They earned a compliment towards extra recess on Friday. When I picked the children up from art, they were complimented again on their good listening and careful artwork. Therefore, earning another compliment!

We started our first reading skill and story for the week. Our skill is sequencing. We read a story called Homer Price. Then we practiced putting things in order by completing a page in our workbook. We introduced our new vocabulary by writing definitions and drawing pictures to help us understand and remember the words.

We took our first spelling pretest. The students then checked their papers and marked the words they missed. This will you and them what words they need to study to prepare for their test on Friday. Tonight they are going to complete a cursive worksheet to help them learn the words.

Tuesday is our extra library day. They checked out some new books. Then we heade to lunch to enjoy chicken quesdillas!

After seeing students math homework, I decided that I needed to adjust the activities I had planned. The students need more time understanding the difference between tenths (o.1) and hundredths (0.01). We put some more information in our notes and discussed the different ways to write decimals. Tomorrow we are going to work on the correct way to say them.

During science, we continued studying the parts of the cell. We focused specifically on the differences between plant and animal cells. We completed a Venn diagram and had a great discussion about the differences. I look forward to seeing thier homework tomorrow!

Ms. Shelburne taught Social Studies today because Mrs. Groot had an appointment.

Finally, we continued pre-reading activities for our novel The Summer of the Swans. We discussed the importance of looks and the influence that we have on others when we say negative things. Tomorrow we are going to start reading the novel.

Sorry everyone... this got posted after school hours.

Homework:

  • Math: Worksheet "Understanding Decimals"

  • Get Progress Report signed

  • Read newsletter with family

The day started out really well. The students did a great job on their morning work and then complimented when I picked them up from P.E. Mr. Morrison said they were well-behaved and had good sportsmanship.

During our reading time we did our first Weekly Reader. The main article was on the H1N1 virus. We discussed theories behind its beginning, how to stop its spread, and the symptons that can occur. I was really impressed with how much they already knew. Mrs. Hall, our school nurse, came into to reinforce the things we learned about stopping the spread of disease. We also watched a Brainpop Video called "Swine Flu" and completed the activities that go along with it.

We introduced decimals in math today. We learned what a decimal is and the difference between tenths and hundredths by coloring in hundred blocks. I was impressed with how quickly the things they learned in fourth grade came back to them.

We read a rubber band book in Science called Cell Mates. We used the information in the book to label a picture of a plant and animal cells. We then identified the function of each cell part.

To introduce our new novel, we read the story The Ugly Duckling. We are going to identify character traits and themes in this story. They will tie into our new novel we are starting next week called The Summer of the Swans by Betsy Byars.

Have a safe and happy Labor Day weekend!

Homework
Math: worksheet "Place Value"

5th Grade Parent Meeting
Wednesday, September 2nd
7:00
I am proud to say that we successfully completed our first full day of school. Here is a brief synopsis of our day.
We started our day completing a worksheet titled "Out-of-this-World Synonyms." While this worksheet was being competed I checked everyones assignment book. I am happy to say that everyone remembered to get their book signed! We had a practice fire drill then rushed off to Art with Mrs. Saltz.
After Art, we had another class meeting. We read over the school handbook and discussed the school rules. Then we all signed a paper stating that we understood the rules and the consequences that come if rules are not followed. We then created a list of students, parents, and teachers responsibility for school. Using this chart and discusssion, we then created our class rules and rewards for following the rules.
Students attended Library at 11:00 and then we went straight to lunch at 11:30.
Math started today! We learned about our Daily Calendar Math. We count by 0.01 until the end of school. We also do a calendar to discover patterns and subtract money from a $1,000,000! The class then created place value charts to put in their math notebooks. A fun game was planned, but we didn't have time to play due to the length of time spent asking questions. The students were given an assignment to finish to demonstrate their knowledge of place value.
After we cam inside from recess, we had our firs science lesson! We prepared our binders for the upcoming units we will be covering. The students asked a lot of questions about the things we will cover this year. I am excited about their enthusiasm. It should be a fun year.
Mrs. Groot taught social studies today. They decorated their social studies notebooks using magazines and brochures.
We ended the day by taking a placment test. This test will be used to put them into reading groups.

5th Grade Parent Meeting
Wednesday, September 2

We had a very busy first day! I ccouldn't believe it was already 1:00 when the bell rang. Here are some of the things we managed to get done today:
  • successfully learned how to complete lunch count
  • spent 45 minutes in P.E. with Mr. Morrison
  • labeled and put away all of our supplies
  • went on a tour of the classroom
  • asked a lot of questions
  • introduced ourselves to the class
  • ate a yummy lunch of pizza
  • participated in a Smartboard activity to learn about our likes and dislikes

Unfortunately, we were so busy that I forgot to take a first day of school picture. I am very sad! I guess I'll have to take a second day of school picture and just pretend it is the first day.

March 6, 2009

We have been really busy the last three days. No, we have not caught up on all the work we missed, but we did manage to get a lot done. I was impressed at how willing they were to work after some days off of school. The kids were flexible with the schedule, which made me very happy!

Your child's homework this weekend includes the following:

Math: Finish Homework Workbook p. 103 (both sides)
Language: Grammar Workbook p. 47-48 (if they didn't finish in class)

We also have some upcoming projects. Each has a different due date. I have encouraged the kids to start early and work on a little on one of them each night.

Science Extra Credit (due March 13th)
Create a homemade musical instrument that has at least four pitches. Don't go out and spend a lot of money. Use things you already have at home. (Example: Take bottles and fill with different amounts of water, tie together, and decorate.)

Social Studies (due March 25th)
The students are to choose a Native American tribe, research the tribe, and then create a shadow box of the things they have learned.

Book Report (due March 31st)
Each student has been assigned a novel on their reading level. They are to create a cereal box that has different things on each side that represent different aspects of the book. Please see the project information sheet that was sent home for more information.

D.A.R.E. Essay (due April 1st)
Deputy Anderson has asked the students to write a three-paragraph essay that demonstrates what the students have learned in the class. In order to participate in graduation, they must have written this essay.
